ASSOCIATION OF HEALTHCARE SOCIAL WORKERS, METRO DC, INC

(Formerly SOCIETY FOR SOCIAL WORK LEADERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE--Greater WDC Chapter)

TRACIE R. HARRIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Tracie Renee Harris was born in Baltimore, MD, the oldest child of a career military officer. She was educated in Europe and the United States, attending Howard University where she received a Bachelors degree in Political Science and an MSW in Social Work. Her 25-year social work career was officially recognized at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. At one time she was also an officer of the National Association of Social Workers.

In addition to her passion for social work, Tracie loved to travel (U.S., Europe, Africa, Canada and the Caribbean), read, plan and participate in various activities with friends, and was active in her neighborhood civic organization in Burtonsville, MD. Of special mention is her love for her family, especially her niece and nephews. She put all of herself into all she did—unselfishly and caringly. She lived her life to the fullest.

Tracie was a long-time member of the DC Chapter of the Society of Social Work Leadership in Healthcare. At the time of her death on May 8, 2008, she was our chapter Vice President. Tracie worked hard to tell others about the Society and encouraged them to attend our meetings and conferences. As was her style, she was always in the forefront of assuring everyone had fun while working and learning. It was almost impossible to be around Tracie without smiling.

In Tracie’s memory—and spirit—the DC Chapter of the Society of Social Work Leadership in Healthcare has established a scholarship for our annual Retreat at the Beach.
